Wayne Batten

WAYNE BATTEN, Southern Area British Boxing Board of Control trainer of the year and founder of Batten’s Boxing gym, is unquestionably the Mr Big of the Noble Art across the South Coast region.

The veteran fight guru and local powerbroker, 63, has been developing talent in the city of Southampton since 2000 when he was the force behind the creation of Millbank ABC.

Between 2003 and 2009, Batten learned the ropes of the professional code of the sport from the wily fountain of knowledge Ronnie Davies, trainer of Chris Eubank, along the coast in Brighton.

Upon forging his own path, Batten trained his first champion in Jon Fernandez, who became Southern Area title holder, before King Davidson won the WBO International championship under the Batten watch. In 2014, Batten travelled Stateside to oversee the WBC title success of David Avenesyan.

In more recent times, Batten guided Mark Chamberlain to the IBF European title, having trained the lightweight from before his professional debut, Batten has also trained a number of overseas professionals.

The flagship fighter from the Batten camp is Ryan Garner, who he has worked in tandem with since day one and the now 27-year-old has won the British, Commonwealth, European and WBC International title belts, with ’The Piranha’ earmarked for world title honours in 2026.

Batten resides in the heart of the city overlooking the famous Southampton docks, from where he travels extensively. His Batten’s Boxing training base is located just a short walk from the St Mary’s home of Southampton FC. Set over 2 floors and with a balcony over looking the ring, it is the stuff of dreams for trainer Wayne Batten.
